As St. Valentine's Day falls during the annual mating period for Thai elephants, the head of a provincial elephant club has decided to hold a wedding for two elephant couples at his camp.
"Now it is mating season and I think we should organize a wedding for them on Valentine's Day, so they can live well and produce well," said Sompast Meepan, head of the Ayutthaya Elephant Club.
The wedding, Sompast said, would feature a traditional welcoming ceremony for productive male elephants, which are hired to mate with female elephants at the club's stables.
"Copulation will take place right after the wedding in an screened outdoor area," he said.
Elephants in Thailand, which in the past were usually trained for the logging business, are now taught to perform entertainment shows for tourists.
